“The best a man can get” is a familiar slogan, and a large following know that it refers to the Gillette safety Atra razor, with the special no-touch-blade when refilling.
The Gillette Company was founded by King Camp Gillette, who manufactured the safety razor in 1895 and trademarked it in 1908. Gillette developed many different forms of the disposable razor blade, and was able to design a double-bladed razor with a pivoting head, called the Atra Razor in 1977. Known as the Contour in many parts of the world, it made the claim that it was now easier for men to shave their necks. A development on the razor, the Atra Plus, added a lubricating strip called the Lubra-Soft.

The Atra Razor caused a furor when it was launched into the market. First of all, it featured the new disposable cartridge blade, which many men found attractive. They didn’t need to touch the blade at all when it needed changing, and was very easy to use, since the whole head snapped off when the blades were dull, and the replacement head snapped on in seconds. Then there was the revolutionary pivoting head.
The most problematic shaving area was always the neck. The only way to get a close shave in the neck area before the Atra razor, was to go to the barber, which was not always convenient! But the pivoting neck of the Atra razor allowed the whole head to move along the contours of the neck, eliminating pesky nicks and cuts, and finally doing away with shaving burns which occurred when the razor was passed over the skin too many times, in order to eliminate the bits of hair still left.

Another plus for the Atra Razor blades is that they are around the cheapest ones in the market, for the quality they offer, hence, it’s one of the best selling razors. After more than 30 years, they are still selling well, with several developments, like razors for women that claim to pivot around the curves of the ankles and calves, to eliminate nicks and cuts there as well.
Forums around the web are full of comments stating that the Atra razor has a very close cut, is sharp while light as a feather, and leaves the face fresh and soft. The fact that it lasts longer than other disposable cartridges, and is of excellent quality materials, is another reason why the Atra razor remains a fan favorite.
